ODIONWELE PA. AUGUSTINE AIMUONMONFIA ISELE

Odionwele Pa. Augustine Aimuomofia Isele, fondly called Pa. A. A. Isele, ascended the exalted throne of the Odionwele of Ebudin in 2009, after the death of his immediate predecessor Pa. Ehiakhamen Okogun. He is the very first educated person in Ebudin community and indeed the very first schooled and educated Odionwele of Ebudin.

Odionwele Pa. Augustine Isele retired from the Edo State Teaching Services in 1984 as a school Head Master, after working for 42 years teaching in most schools all around Esan land. He was the very first teacher/Head master in the first Primary School in Ewohimi. The school was actually named after his name as the first teacher of the School.  Pa Augustine Isele also taught in several primary schools in Igueben, Ugbegun, Ebele, Ewuato, Ubiaja, Ujiogba, and other towns and villages all around Ebudin and in Esan Land.

Before discussing the details of the achievements and event of this great Odionwele of Ebudin, it will be proper to talk a little about the personal Curriculum Vitae of Pa. A. A. Isele. It is on record that he attended the famous Holy Cross Cathedral Primary School, Benin City, where he obtained his First School Leaving School Certificate (FSLC) in 1942. Unsatisfied with this level of academic attainment, Pa. Augustine Isele obtained his TC 11 Certificate in 1971, after so many years of teaching experience. With this further academic attainment, it was easy for him to be promoted to the position of Head Master grade 2, the grade he retired from in the Edo State Teaching Service in 1984, as the Head Master of the St. Patrick’s Primary School, Ebudin.

Odionwele Pa. Augustine Aimuomofia Isele, while recalling his struggles in life, informed the author that he served his master, one Chief Osadolor Okundiaye, for six years in Benin, while pursuing his education before returning home to Ebudin to take up the teaching job in the then Mid-West Teaching Service Commission.

Upon gaining employment in the Mid-West Teaching Service Commission on his return from schooling in Benin, part of his task was to get as many indigenes of Ebudin into school, to acquire educational knowledge. This was however resisted by some parents who felt that education will prevent their children from helping them in their farm works. He was severally afflicted by some strange ailments, remotely inflicted on him by some unwilling parents who did not want their children to be taken to school. This however did not deter him from taking some of the youths in Ebudin then to school. This aptly explains why the wide gap between his generation of educated people and the next set of educated people in Ebudin. That is also why the first set of professionals, of Ebudin extraction, are much younger people than Pa. Augustine Aimuomofia Isele who indeed is always very happy when he sees the large number of people now educated in Ebudin. He gives glory to God Almighty for it.

Odionwele Pa. Augustine A. Isele is a very devout Christian and he is one of the early persons to embrace Christianity in Ebudin. His first contact with the missionaries was in Benin City, where he had his early education. He is baptized, confirmed and married in the Catholic Church and he has ensured that all his Children also embrace the catholic faith; even though he believed in the freedom of worship for everybody.

It must be mentioned here that Odionwele Pa. Augustine A. Isele and his wife Madam Victoria Ejalenrie Isele (Nee Imaralu) were awarded a “Certificate of Recognition”, by the then Arch Bishop of the metropolitan sea of Benin, Arch Bishop Patrick Ebosele Ekpu, for being the third oldest couple in his diocese and for living an exemplary happy married life for 52 years as at year 2000. Madam Victoria got married to Pa Augustine A. Isele on 30th July, 1948 and lived with her husband for 65years till death did them part on that fateful day of 9th March, 2013.

Since Odionwele Pa. Augustine A. Isele ascended the throne as the Odionwele of Ebudin there has been an unleashing of development in Ebudin Community which has been ascribed to his very humane, educated, and Christianly dispositions. Some of the events and infrastructure development that have taken place in Ebudin during the on-going reign of Odionwele Pa. Isele can be mentioned here as follows:

Extension of Generalized System of Mobile (GSM) networks to Ebudin:

The first major thing that have happened during the on-going reign of Pa. Augustin A. Isele is the installation of a Globacom Mast at Ebudin, sponsored by Hon. Sunny Ereghan, from Idimu-Ohoghe and Mr. Fabian Okhigbochie from Idimu-Oghale, who provided his premises for the location of the Globacom Mast.

Additionally, Mr. Stephen Omodiagbe also worked for the installation of the Etisalat network in Ebudin. He too provided his premises, at Odogbe quarter for the location of the Etisalat mast.

The installation of the two Masts has greatly enhanced the reception of GSM signals in Ebudin. Some indigenes of Ebudin have also been given employment in the two base stations located at Ebudin.

Removal of all known deities from Ebudin Community:

Immediately following the extension of GSM networks into Ebudin was the removal of various known deities from Ebudin Community. The youths of Ebudin had organized an all-night retreat, with over five Reverend Fathers and Pastors in attendance, which led to the removal of all known deities (called ‘Osun’ in Ebudin) and shrines from Ebudin community. Some of these deities included the famous Obono-Ughele Shrine, usually served by the entire Ebudin people, led by the people of Odogbe quarter in Ebudin.

Others known deities (Osuns) that were removed from Ebudin community during this retreat were:

The ‘Obogbaotor’- located in Idimu-Arua

The ‘Osunodion’ - located in Idimu-Oghale

The ‘Ehila’ – located in Idumu-Ohoghe

The ‘Ohamughale’ – located in Idimu-Igun

The ‘Osekpen’ – Located in Ididigba

All the shrines in other quarters in Ebudin were all destroyed during this occasion. This incidence created some disturbing uncertainties in Ebudin with lots of palpable fears, insinuations and apprehensions in the mind of the indigenes. It was however resolved by the Odionwele Pa. Augustine Isele, who directed that those who feel aggrieved over the destruction of the various deities can consult their respective oracles, if any, to find out what they needed to do to allow them have peace of their mind. He made it clear to the people of Ebudin that as the Odionwele of Ebudin, he should have been more worried than any other person; and that he took full responsibility for the actions of the youths at this retreat ceremony. He therefore pleaded with all indigene of Ebudin to allow peace to reign.

However, the Odogbe people of Ebudin insisted that they must be provided with a cow to enable them appease the Obono-Ughele. In order for peace to reign, the requested ‘Cow’ was given to the Odogbe people by the community and all parties were satisfied.

Establishment of St Patrick Nursery and Primary School in Ebudin by the Missionaries:

As an educationist and a devout catholic Christian, Pa. Augustine A. Isele was favoured by the then Bishop of Uromi diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeuze, who chose Ebudin community for the establishment of a Nursery and Primary School, brought by the Catholic Missionary to his diocese. The Bishop had the prerogative to choose between Ebudin and any other town or community in his diocese where the school will be sited and he chose Ebudin.

One of the conditions stipulated by the missionaries to be fulfilled by the community was the provision of a sizeable expanse of land for the school project. Typical of the Ebudin people, they rallied amongst themselves and provided enough land for the school project. Kudos however goes to Sir Mathew Ikhiduanumhen, Pa. Ewiolo Akhaowa and Mr. Elvis Eboigbe, who willingly donated their plots of land for this school project. Sir Mathew Ikhiduanumhen particularly had to acquire more plots of land to meet the desire of the missionaries. He also offered his home to accommodate the teachers and Rev. Sisters who came to formally set up the school. We can only but beg God Almighty to continue to protect these notable Ebudin sons who made this great sacrifice of donation of their plots of land towards ensuring the successful commencement of the school.

Building of more market stores in Ebudin Community market:

During the on-going reign of Pa. Augustine A. Isele, the Esan Central Local Government Council has built more market stores in the Ebudin market, as part of their quest to show their presence in Ebudin. Odionwele Pa. Isele ensured that land was given for this project in Ebudin.

Building of a website for Ebudin Community:

A website was built by Sir Paschal Isele (KSJI) for Ebudin Community and he has continued to maintain the website at no cost to the Community. The web address is: www.ebudincommunity.com.

This website has given the Ebudin people, all over the World, the opportunity to read and get regular updates about the happenings in their community wherever they may be. Part of the content of this book has been uploaded onto this website.

The construction of the Igueben-Ebudin-Izogen-Ujiogba Road:

The construction of the Igueben-Ebudin-Izogen-Ujiogba road which was done by the Edo State Government during the administration of Comrade Governor, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, happened during the on-going reign of Pa. Augustine A. Isele as the Odionwele of Ebudin. This is a dream-come-true for the people of Ebudin, who have suffered lack of motorable roads over the years, in spite of several supports they had given to successive governments of Edo State.

Removal of domestic live stocks from Ebudin:

As the unleashing of progress and development continued in Ebudin, some evil forces was said to be finding ways of fighting back by using domestic animals such as Cows, Dogs, Cats and Goats to cause harm to others in Ebudin Community. Prior to the final order to remove or kill these domestic animals from Ebudin, the Onojie of Ugbegun, HRH Samuel Iwono Obade 11 had earlier instructed the destruction of all the cows in Ebudin Community as they were then causing evil things in the community. This was done during the reign of Odionwele Pa. Ehiakhamen Okogun and it was fully complied with.

Following recent observation that other animals are being used by the evil ones in Ebudin to perpetuate evil, Odionwele Pa. Isele and the elders of Ebudin, after due consultation with the entire Ebudin People, ordered that all domestic animals must henceforth be caged by their owners instead of being allowed to roam about the city destroying other people’s properties. This was fully complied with.

The construction of Water Borehole in Ebudin:

As part of his constituency project, the representative of Esan center in the Edo State House of assembly, Hon. Victor Edoror constructed and donated to Ebudin Community, a water borehole for use by all indigenes during the reign of Odionwele Pa. Augustine Isele.

Electrification of Ebudin Community:

One of the most rewarding of all the goodies that have happened in Ebudin during the reign of Odionwele Pa. Augustine Isele, was the extension of electricity into Ebudin by the then Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). It has been the prayer of the Ebudin people that electricity be provided in Ebudin in order to improve their social well-being.

It must be mentioned here and for posterity sake, that the provision of electricity to Ebudin was assisted by some Ebudin sons who provided the sum of One million Naira (N1Million) to the contractor, at the critical stage of the contract execution, when the contractor was unable to proceed with the contract. This amount was required to re-mobilize the contractor to site in order for the contract awarding body to know the contract was still on-going. While Sir Matthew Ikhiduanumhen (KSP) provided the sum of Six Hundred Thousand Naira (N600,000.00), Sir Paschal Isele (KSJI) provided the sum of Four Hundred Thousand Naira (N400,000.00). To be joined with these two prominent Ebudin sons that helped ensure that the electricity project was completed include Sir Austine Omofoman (KSJI) and Hon. Sunny Ereghan who helped engaged the contractor and the concerned authorities such that the Ebudin electrification project was in top burner until its completion. The author would like to appreciate these four prominent Ebudin sons and tell them not to relent in their efforts in ensuring a better place for our dear Ebudin Community.

The era of darkness has passed, the bible said it right " when righteous man is on the throne, people rejoice but the throne of a wicked man brings sorrow to his subject. God be praised for this Era of pa Isele and Governor Comrade Oshiomhole.
